A pre-existing medical condition is a health problem that you have had for a long period of time, before you arrive in B.C. and before you apply for health insurance.

All international students enrolled in studies at B.C. K-12 public and independent schools must have health insurance coverage. When you apply for health insurance in B.C., the provider will ask you if you have any “pre-existing medical conditions.”

If you have a pre-existing health condition, you must tell the health insurance company before you sign up for their health insurance plan. If you do not, your insurance may not cover your health care costs.

It is also important to notify your school (and school district) of any pre-existing medical conditions.
