Students in B.C. usually attend school from Monday to Friday during the school year. Typically the school year begins in September and ends in June.
During the school year you will not attend school during national and provincial holidays or other designated holidays. For example, you will not attend school on days when your teachers are away studying for professional development (usually called “Pro-D days”).
Your school will also be closed for two weeks during the Winter Break (which includes Christmas and New Year’s Day), and for one or two weeks during Spring Break.
Other national holidays are called Statutory Holidays. Some examples of statutory holidays are Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
